Researching with Social Bookmarking

LEQ: How can social bookmarking aid students in their research?


What is Diigo?

  • Digest of Internet Information, Groups, and Other stuff
  • web annotation and social bookmarking service (bookmarks/favorites are stored on the web so you can access anywhere)
  • new kind of online research and collaborative research tool (find friends and search their bookmarks)
  • integrates tags and folders, highlighting and clipping, sticky notes, and group-based collaboration
  • What's New in Diigo v5


How can Diigo be used in education?

Diigo allows teachers to:
  • highlight critical features within text and images and write comments directly on the web pages
  • collect and organize series of web pages and web sites into coherent and thematic sets
  • facilitate online conversations within the context of the materials themselves
  • collaborate and share resources among themselves
  • enable a whole new process of online knowledge management, learning, and teaching in the information age


Educator Accounts

  1. Create Diigo account (or you may connect with your facebook, google, twitter or yahoo account)
  2. Apply for an educator account (you must use your school email address- see the Diigo Help for more Getting Started information)
  3. Install the Diigo Toolbar for Internet Explorer or Firefox, or Diigolet for browsers that do not support the toolbar. You also have the option of dragging a "Post to Diigo" button to your toolbar for easy bookmarking.
  4. Export your Delicious bookmarks to Diigo or have Diigo post to Delicious.
  5. Click on "Teacher Console" at the top of the screen. Create student accounts and groups.
  6. Create a tag dictionary for each group. (See here for an example handout for students with example tags. Note: This handout is for Delicious but the same principles apply in Diigo.) You could then create a linkroll or tagroll to post on a class web site.
  7. If you are creating a list of web sites for students to access, you can create a Diigo WebSlide to give an overview of the sites they will be using. These can be embedded into a web site:

Diigo Implementation

Note: These links are pdf files. You will need to have access to Adobe Reader or Foxit Reader.
  • Teach basic Diigo use (Student Handout1 Student Handout 2)
  • Teach the social bookmarking roles (Handout 1 Handout 2)
    • Original Thinker- bookmarks at least 20 sites connected to topic
    • Connector- bookmarks resources on secondary topics (those topics that are related to the original topic)
    • Johnny Opposite- checks the sites to make sure they are representative of both sides (if a controversial topic)
    • Reliability Cop- rates the sites on overall value and trustworthiness
    • Mind Reader- searches through Diigo bookmark lists for other useful sites for the project
    • Cleaning Crew- ensures that every link has tags and short descriptions
  • Teach how to make annotations (Handout 1 Handout 2)
  • Teach the shared annotation roles (Handout 1 Handout2)
    • Captain Cannonball- adds initial comment/highlights to each site
    • Provocateur- challenges the thinking of his/her group in the shared annotation conversations
    • Middle Man- finds common ground and draws conclusions based on the annotations
    • Author's Worst Nightmare- challenges statements and ideas made by the authors of the articles/sites
    • Repo Man- summarizes at the end of each set of annotations
  • Teach how to make quality annotations (Handout 1 Handout 2) , reflecting on annotations (Handout) and how they will be scored (Handout 1 Handout 2 ). Teacher Directions 1 Teacher Directions 2
  • Checklist , Bookmarking Handout and/or Annotating Handout for student groups to complete before beginning a project.
  • Create "Topics" from the group's homepage wherein students can engage in discussions not linked directly to a bookmark.

Other Considerations for Students


Try It!

Sign in with the provided student ID and password. Try adding useful web sites about Diigo as well as highlighting and annotating on the 50 Tech Tools site that is already part of the bookmarks. Add your instructional ideas to the "Topic" thread so we can learn from each other! Remember that when you add a sticky note you need to make it visible to the TechSummit group.


Join!

Join one of the SWSD Diigo groups (signed into your account- not the student account) to encourage collaboration and sharing of ideas/links. Click on the "Apply to Join This Group" button. You will then see this screen and need to decide how frequently you want to be emailed when there are updates to the group.

Start!

Create a group or group(s) for you class(es). Start finding links to add to your personal/professional bookmarks as well as to student groups. Don't forget to:
  • Check the bookmark as "Private" if you do not want it visible to other users.
  • Check the bookmark as "Unread" if you want to read it later and have it sorted with other unread sites.
  • Add to a list or group.
  • Add meaningful tags (you may want to create your own "tag dictionary" to help organize your sites).
  • Find friends to follow on Diigo so you can share bookmarks and collaborate.
